How much unclaimed property is being held for people in Fresno?

The California State Controller is currently holding $102,190,161 in unclaimed property tied to 145,682 separate records reported by holders in Fresno, California. That total spans forgotten refunds, uncollected wages, old insurance benefits and dormant bank balances, among other categories. Most individual records are modest: the average value across all 145,682 is $701. But 1,021 records are worth $10,000 or more, which is a reminder that a single unclaimed account can sometimes be significant.

These figures are drawn from the State Controller’s own downloadable property records, which California Unclaimed Property Services indexes alongside 14,800,558 records statewide. A record under your name, a former address, or a Fresno employer you once worked for could be sitting among them without your knowledge, because holders are only required to report the property, not to keep searching for the owner.

What kinds of property are Fresno residents owed?

The largest categories reported for Fresno are not exotic. They are the ordinary loose ends of everyday financial life, left behind when a company could not reach someone after a move, a name change, or a closed account.

  • Individual Policy Benefit/Claim — 5,504 records, $4,614,529
  • Misc Intangible Property — 5,778 records, $3,247,537
  • Premium Refunds — 8,746 records, $3,140,198
  • Misc Outstanding Checks — 7,409 records, $3,111,377
  • Refunds Due — 9,054 records, $2,960,737
  • Wages, Payroll, Salaries — 7,851 records, $2,255,989

Insurance-related categories dominate the highest-value bucket, which is one reason two of the top reporting businesses for Fresno are insurers rather than banks.

Which companies reported the most unclaimed property in Fresno?

A small number of large holders account for a substantial share of the records tied to Fresno addresses. They are companies that, at some point, owed money to a customer, policyholder, or employee and were unable to deliver it.

  • Pacific Gas & Electric Company — 5,128 records, $1,965,452
  • Metlife Inc. — 3,343 records, $2,941,288
  • Wells Fargo Bank NA (Apecs 1009) — 2,882 records, $2,620,537
  • Metropolitan Life Insurance Company — 1,343 records, $2,193,414
  • Fnf Utc LLC — 1,370 records, $593,496
  • Citibank N A — 1,468 records, $484,674

If you once had a utility account, a life insurance policy, or a checking account with one of these names in the Fresno area, it is worth checking whether your name appears among their reported records.

Is there a deadline to claim unclaimed property in Fresno?

No. California places no deadline on claiming unclaimed property. The State holds it indefinitely until it is claimed by the owner or, in the case of a deceased owner, by an heir. The one exception is an estate that has been permanently escheated, meaning the State has taken title outright; no claim will be paid against property in that status (State Controller, Unclaimed Property). Outside of that narrow category, a record reported this year is claimable just as readily as one reported a decade ago.

This also means there is no advantage in rushing a decision, and no legitimate basis for anyone to tell you a Fresno record will expire if you do not act by a certain date.

What does it cost to use a recovery service?

Under Code of Civil Procedure §1582(a)(2)(C), a fee to locate, deliver or recover property reported under §1530 cannot exceed 10 per cent of what is recovered. That cap covers the great majority of the Fresno records described above. It does not cover estates that reach the State through county probate, since those arrive under the Probate Code rather than §1530, and the State Controller states there are no fee restrictions on investigators filing for the owners or heirs of county probated estates.

No fee, of any kind, may be collected before the Controller has approved a claim and paid the owner; an agreement that tries to charge upfront is invalid. California Unclaimed Property Services charges a percentage of what is recovered and nothing if nothing is recovered. See pricing for our current rate, and resources/finder-fee-law for the underlying statute.

How do I check whether the State is holding something for me?

Start by searching under every name and address you have used in Fresno, since a maiden name, a nickname, or an old apartment address can be the reason a record does not surface under an obvious search. If you are trying to trace an estate rather than your own name, the probate side works differently and is worth checking separately.

Once a match is found, the State requires a written claim with supporting documents, and claims of $1,000 or more in cash, along with all securities and safe deposit box claims, must be notarized regardless of value. Our search checks our indexed records for Fresno and statewide, and our services/full-service-recovery handles the documentation and filing on your behalf for the percentage described above.

Questions People Ask

Does every Fresno resident have unclaimed property waiting for them?

No. Only some of the 145,682 Fresno records belong to any given person, and many residents will have nothing on file. The figures describe the total pool reported for the area, not a guarantee for any individual. Searching under your own name and past addresses is the only way to know.

How do I know a Fresno record actually belongs to me?

A match is based on the name and last known address the holder reported, which may be old. If a record looks close but not exact, supporting documents such as a former lease or pay stub can help confirm ownership when the claim is filed.

Is there a deadline for Fresno residents to claim their property?

No. California unclaimed property has no claiming deadline, and the State holds it until the owner or an heir comes forward. The only exception is an estate that has been permanently escheated, where the State has taken title and no claim can be paid.

What if the money relates to a Fresno probate case rather than an old account?

Estates that pass through county probate are tracked separately from the §1530 property described on this page. See property/probate-estates for how that file works and how claiming as an heir or executor differs.

How much will I owe if I use a recovery firm for a Fresno claim?

For property reported under §1530, the fee cannot exceed 10 per cent of what is recovered, and nothing can be charged before the State approves and pays the claim. Probate estates are not subject to that statutory cap.

Do I have to use a recovery service to get my Fresno property back?

No firm is required to file a claim. California Unclaimed Property Services exists for people who would rather have the search, documentation and notarization handled for them, in exchange for a percentage of what is recovered.

What happens if my Fresno record is worth $10,000 or more?

Larger claims go through the same process, but cash claims of $1,000 or more require notarization, and all securities and safe deposit box claims must be notarized regardless of value. See how-to-claim/documents for what the State requires.

Figures on this page are from our copy of the State Controller’s published file as it stood on 8 September 2026. The State republishes the file weekly, so current totals will differ. Search is always against the latest copy.

How You Are Protected

Our fee is capped at ten per cent of what is recovered by Code of Civil Procedure §1582, and nothing is owed until the State Controller has paid you. If we recover nothing, you owe nothing. Our recovery fee is never asked for up front — it comes out of money the Controller has already paid you. A booking deposit on an in-person appointment is a separate thing, and is credited back against anything you are charged.

California Unclaimed Property Services is a private asset recovery firm. We are not the California State Controller’s Office.
