Search California Unclaimed Property — Free
Enter a name exactly as it may have appeared on an old account. We search the State Controller’s published records under every reasonable variant of it, not just the spelling you typed.
This search covers properties worth $100 and above. Smaller properties exist and are claimable — they are on the State’s own site, not in this index. What this covers
Nothing Under that Name — Which Is the Usual Answer
Most people search and find nothing. That does not always mean there is nothing, because the record was created by whoever held the account and may not carry the spelling you use.
Worth Trying Before You Give Up
- A maiden name, or a former married name
- The surname on its own, with the first name left blank
- A parent’s or grandparent’s name, if you may be an heir
- A business name with and without Inc., LLC or Co.
The State holds 104 records under the surname Dansby, worth $81,249. See every city and first name they are recorded under
What this search covers
We hold a copy of the California State Controller’s published unclaimed property file: 14,662,314 records worth $13.61 billion, last rebuilt on October 16, 2026. We did not create this data and we do not decide what is in it.
File it yourself, properly
Our own search is one slice of the State’s file. The DIY Claim Kit is the whole method we use on a paid claim, written out: how to search the State’s full record, how to read what comes back, the affirmation form section by section, exactly which documents each claimant type has to supply, when a notary is required, and where to send it so it is not queued behind the mail.
Get the DIY Claim Kit — $49.00
One payment, yours to keep, no percentage of anything you recover. If you later find something large enough for us to work, the kit price comes off our fee.
What is not in it
The State publishes its file in dollar bands. We load the bands from $100 upward. Properties below that are absent from this search — not because they were claimed or expired, but because we have not loaded them. If you know of a property worth less than that, it is almost certainly still sitting with the State, and you can claim it yourself for free.
Search the State’s full file at claimit.ca.gov
We are open about the reason: California caps a recovery fee at 10% (Code of Civil Procedure §1582). A fee of a few dollars cannot pay for the identity work a claim requires, so we do not carry that band and we would not take those claims. Telling you where to go is more useful than pretending the property is not there.
Nothing today is not nothing ever
Banks and insurers hand accounts to the State Controller roughly twice a year, and the file grows every time. We will keep checking this name against each new file and write to you if it appears.
How This Search Differs from the Official One
The State Controller’s own search matches what you type, and nothing else. Ours also finds maiden names, married names, initials, common misspellings, hyphen variants, and business names with and without their suffixes — because the record was created by whoever held the account, not by you.
Every result comes from the Controller’s own published file, which we rebuild weekly. Each one carries the State’s own property ID, so the record you are looking at is traceable to the source rather than to us.
What We Search Under
- Your name as typed, plus initials and middle-name variants
- Maiden and former married names, if you tell us them
- Common misspellings and transposed letters
- Former addresses in California
- Business names with and without Inc., LLC, Co. and DBAs
How You Are Protected
Our fee is capped at ten per cent of what is recovered by Code of Civil Procedure §1582, and nothing is owed until the State Controller has paid you. If we recover nothing, you owe nothing.
California Unclaimed Property Services is a private asset recovery firm. We are not the California State Controller’s Office.
